TESOL Certificate

TESOL recipients with certificates

TCU students, staff, and faculty wishing to teach English to speakers of other languages obtain the TESOL Certificate. Especially with the Bachelor’s degree, the Certificate opens doors to volunteer opportunities and to well paying jobs alike.

Students may draw upon undergraduate courses from more than 30 disciplines in 9 of TCU’s colleges and schools.

Completion of the certificate requires 18 hours (six courses), including 9 hours in the following:

TESL 20003 TESOL for the Teacher Scholar

3

TESL 30003 English Learned via TESOL

3

TESL 40003 TESOL Certificate Practicum

3

The other 9 hours are to be taken in the following three different areas of emphasis:

• Adult Second Language for Communication (ASLC). (An example of an ASLC area course is ARAB 10153 – Beginning Arabic I.)

• Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Society (DEI & S). (An example of a DEI area course is CRES 20003 – Seminar Critical Race Theory.)

• Language Teaching and Literacies (LTL). (An example of an LTL area course is COSD 30334 – Child Language Development.)

Job opportunities teaching English with a TESOL Certificate and a Bachelor’s degree are noted here. And here. And here (“How I made over $100K a year teaching English overseas”).

In Fort Worth, there are recent job ads:

And “if you’re looking to volunteer, TESOL certification, also called a TESL (teaching English as a second language) or TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certification should work just fine”; click here. And here: “There are a multitude of work-exchange-English-teaching-volunteer-gigs that will compensate you with food and lodging. Volunteering is incredible and it gives you an amazing experience. The countries above are all very popular volunteering destinations, with enormous opportunities to exchange English lessons for free lodging and maybe even free food.”

Those applying to a Peace Corps position increase their chances of being selected:

“TEFL/TESOL certification is highly desirable.”

Those applying to a Fulbright ETA position (English Teaching Assistant position) increase their chances of being selected:

“TESOL/TEFL Certification – Those already holding certificates/degrees are encouraged to apply… Previous teaching experience or completion of a teaching certificate is helpful.”

Completion of the certificate requires 18 hours (six courses), including 9 hours, the following 3 TESL courses:
