Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies

Studying Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies offers students the chance to critically examine the impact of the construct of race throughout time in our global society, particularly within the context of power and domination. Our curriculum re-members and centers the lived experiences, material conditions, and cultures and creativity of peoples, who originated from the Americas, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific Islands and, through conquest and colonialism, genocide, enslavement, environmental and economic instability, and migration, were either dispossessed from or made their way to what is now the United States, evolving new cultures and histories that expose the on-going contradictions of our society.

In addition to reveling in the beauty of the rich cultures of the “Global South” and their various diasporas, students who complete a degree in Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies will find themselves prepared to understand the nuances of race and racism; identify systemic racism in their neighborhoods, places of worship, campuses and workplaces, etc.; and apply their newfound knowledge and skills to not only navigate racism but also work collaboratively with others to actively dismantle it.
